Overview


The temple is one of 275 Siva Devra Sthalam.The place Thiru Karaveeram is about a kilometres from Thiru kannamangai, which is 7 kilometres from Thiruvarore.Main deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Arulmigu Thiru Karaveera Nadhar and his consort known as Prathyaksha Minnammai. Lingam in the temple is big in size.Sthala vruksham is Arali and teertham Anavaradha teertham.Gowthamar worshiped Lord Siva of this place. Karaveeram means Ponnarali. Since the Sthala Vruksham is Arali the place is known as Karaveeram.This Shivastalam is located 11 kilometres west of Tiruvarur. At Karayapuram enroute to Kumbhakonam.  Tiruttalaiyaalankadu and Peruvelur are the other Shivastalams in the vicinity.  Karaveeram is regarded as the 91st in the arrangement of Tevara Stalams in the Chola Region south of the waterway Kaveri. The Bhaktavatsala Perumal temple at Tirukkannamangai is located in the vicinity. Further 2 kilometres down, we get a small village called Vadakandam. Taking a left turn there, we reach the temple. This is the 91st Lord Shiva temple on southern bank of river Cauvery which is praised in Thevaram hymns. The consort of Shiva here is called Minnambikai/Prathyaksha nayaki. It is believed that Brahma worshipped Shiiva here and hence the name Brahmapureshwar.  Since this place was called Karaveeram, Shiva is Karaveeranathar here.The three celebrated Shaivite saints- Sambandar, Tirunavakkarasar and Sundarar have praised this temple in their hymns. Every new moon day is a festival day in the temple. Also, Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January; Maha Shivrathri in February-March and Panguni Uthiram in March-April are grandly celebrated in the temple.


About the Temple

Legend/Story
